【摘要】:SNMmonitorsareaneffectiveandunobtrusivemeanstosearchforconcealedSNM,andfacilitysecurityplansusethemtopreventSNMtheftorunauthorizedremovalfromSNMaccessareas.Functionaltestingofmonitorsonadailybasiswithradioactivesourcescanassurethattheyareingoodworkingorder.Thesignificantuseofalessfrequent,in-plantevaluationofanSNMmonitoristoverifythatthemonitorachievesanexpectedprobabilityofdetectionforanSNMoralternativetestsource.Note18212;AnSNMtestsourceusedforin-plantevaluationisnormallyshieldedonlybyprotectiveencapsulationandthepartsofavehiclethatmayliebetweenthesourceandthemonitorrsquo;detectors.However,theevaluationprocedurecouldjustaswellbeusedtoverifyanexpectedlevelofdetectionforSNMinsideofcontainersorshields.1.1Thisguideisoneofaseriesonspecialnuclearmaterial(SNM)monitorsandtheirperformanceevaluation.OthersintheseriesprovideinformationonSNMmonitoring,monitorcalibration,andmethodsofevaluation(see),butGuideC993,inparticular,providesmuchofthebasisforthisguide.Thepurposeforaguidetoin-plantperformanceevaluationistoprovideacomparativelyrapidwaytoverifywhetherSNMmonitorsperformasexpectedfordetectingSNMoranalternativetestsource.1.2GuideC993pointsoutthatin-plantevaluationisonepartofaprogramtokeepSNMmonitorsinproperoperatingconditionandthatin-plantevaluationcanbeusedasaroutineoperationalevaluationorcanbeusedtoverifyperformanceafteramonitoriscalibrated.1.3ThisguideisbasedonASTMstandardsthatdescribeapplyingandevaluatingSNMmonitors.
